The first time I had ever heard of the dancing violinist Lindsey Stirling was when one of my nephews made the comment that he had seen her on some TV talent show. He claimed that she was awesome and wanted to see her play in concert someday. “Wow!” I thought. A hip new violinist that strays beyond the realm of the classics and appeals to the younger folks? I was intrigued. Whenever I mentioned one of my old, crusty classic rockers to my young nephews their reaction was usually summed up with a quick, “Who?” So while trying to stay hip and keep my musical dignity, I dove into the little fiddle player’s music, and over the past few years I’ve became somewhat a fan of Ms. Stirling.
A Lindsey Stirling concert is a show like no other. It’s a little DANCING WITH THE STARS. It’s a little CIRQUE DU SOLEIL. Mostly though, it’s a heck of a lot of talent! I learned that she was bringing her dance moves and violin playing to the Texas Trust CU Theater in Grand Prairie, Texas well in advance of her concert, but it took me nearly three months to talk myself into going. Maybe I’m just getting into that “I just want to stay home” stage of my life, but I finally gave myself a good kick in the butt and hauled myself down to her show. In all my years of concert going I’ve never regretted going to a concert, but I have regretted NOT going to a few. So I bought myself a ticket and this is what I posted about the Lindsey Stirling concert!

Does anyone ever say that they’re in the mood for some good violin dance music? Okay, I’m guessing few people ever say that, but I made the drive down to the Texas Trust CU Theatre in Grand Prairie Saturday night to see the dancing violinist herself, Lindsey Stirling jump around, kick around, and fiddle around! Around fifteen years ago Lindsey was on America’s Got Talent where judge Sharon Osbourne doubted if the little lady could make it as a solo artist, but apparently, a lot of folks disagreed with Mrs. O, and the place was packed with a bunch of folks who wanted to watch little Lindsey take on the role of a solo artist and dance around while playing her violin! Some more than others. I’m still wondering about the bearded, burly looking guy decked out in the tutu down front. However, we’d all have to wait until opener PVRIS got their stage time. The band’s lead singer kept yelling out Grand Prairie which was the city we were technically in, but Lindsey got it right when she said a big hello to DFW!
The last time I saw Lindsey Stirling in concert she was making her violin sing out good tidings of great joy on her Christmas tour, but it’s now July so she danced out on stage while pulling her bow across the strings to Led Zeppelin’s KASHMIR. Always bubbling with personality, Lindsey repeatedly called out how excited she was to play this concert! Of course she loves to perform anywhere, but the big kicker for this show was that it was the first INDOOR concert she had done in a while during this summer’s tour, which means she got to jump around in the comfort of air conditioning! We could all cry out an “Amen” to that! Apparently, the cool indoor air was carrying Ms. Stirling right off her feet, literally! After the girl got tired of busting dance moves while playing her violin she took to the air! At times I thought I might have taken a wrong turn off of I-30 and wound up at a Cirque du Soleil show. Indeed, the little lady had gone from musician, to dancer, to acrobat! I’ve seen a lot of violin players in my life, but I haven’t seen many who play upside down while hanging in the air! Or spinning around in the air for that matter. Apparently, Lindsey was really digging the air conditioning!
When she got bored of spinning and dancing, the little violinist grabbed a microphone and decided to sing a little! Such was a night of surprises where nothing was out of reach. I wouldn’t have been too shocked if the girl had grabbed her guitar player’s guitar and tore into Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Freebird, after all, she did start the show with a Zeppelin tune. Okay, that didn’t happen, but the 5’3” violin master owned the stage and danced around like a ballerina to the point where I almost expected the guy in the tutu to jump up on stage and join her. Very few times have I seen a performer go down to a full split while never missing a note.
She even brought a little Christmas joy to the steamy month of July after several folks in the crowd called out for the seasonal song CAROL OF THE BELLS! It certainly takes a major talent and stage presence to bring out the Christmas tunes while the outside temperature is a blazing 100 degrees! Few musicians can take on the role of a butterfly either, but Lindsey seemed to pull that one off as well. Many of her songs came with a narrated story, such as a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, and as she raised off the stage Lindsey suddenly had wings! However, there a was no narrative needed when she traded licks with her guitar player as the two dove into THE DEVIL WENT DOWN TO GEORGIA. I just have to wonder how many violin players, regardless of their musical education or genres, play that song either on stage or in private. However, I doubt if many have tried playing the tune while carrying out the high kicks of a high school drill team. Even though the talented woman turns forty in a couple of months, I have a feeling she won’t be slowing down any time soon. She will always be the dancing violinist!
